We are excited to introduce Michelle, founder of BIOS APOTHECARY, a plant-based
skincare and wellness line based out of Queens, NY. Michelle is inspired by the world’s ancient healing traditions, the wisdom of nature and the innate intelligence of the body. During her workshops on Keenobby, she invites you to explore the healing properties of plants while blending roots, leaves, barks, flowers and extracts into customized, restorative formulas to help balance and revitalize the body and mind.
Michelle answered a few questions for us:
Tell us the story behind BIOS APOTHECARY: How did it get all started?
My journey into holistic wellness started with architecture- I specialized in sustainable design and worked with clients to create wholesome living spaces and landscapes. After years of practice I realized that while the impact of our surroundings is significant, a building is really the outermost layer of a person.
“Health is a dynamic state of balance between the mind, body and environment, and the skin is the interface between these inner and outer worlds.”
I created the apothecary line to address this more intimate scale of wellness.
Your work is centered around Beauty in Health. How do you define this?
BIOS APOTHECARY is founded on an appreciation for the wisdom of nature and the innate intelligence of the body. We believe that vitality and radiance are the outward expression of a balanced body and mind and advocate holistic healing methods that restore an inner foundation of health. We work with the the healing powers of plants, combining them into restorative formulas that target particular patterns of imbalance in the body. Our all natural blends are made with pure, living botanicals- roots, leaves, barks, flowers and extracts, which balance and revitalize the constitution.
How do you select and where do you find ingredients for your products?
We strive towards “Sattva”, a concept in the Vedic tradition which refers to healthy, nutritious and clean products which purify the body. We blend organic, wildcrafted and food grade ingredients with therapeutic grade essential oils selected for their aromatic qualities and medicinal properties. Just as importantly, our blends are made without chemicals, synthetic preservatives, highly processed ingredients, parabens, GMOs, artificial scents, colors or dyes.
As an animal lover and vegetarian of more than 20 years, it is especially important to me that our ingredients are cruelty free. Most of our products are vegan, although we do use carefully sourced beeswax in some of our herbal balms and salves. We make every effort to avoid inflicting harm on any sentient being or the natural world.
Natural medicine, aromatherapy and herbalism are spreading fast, how do you see the future expansion of Bios Apothecary?
Consumers have a new level of awareness about the products they put in and on their body and are taking command of their own health and wellbeing. There is also a shift towards understanding and addressing the patterns of imbalance in the body rather than treating the symptoms alone. Natural medicine, aromatherapy, and herbalism are all founded on this basis. We are inspired by the world’s ancient healing modalities and derive many of our formulas from the wisdom of these traditions.
“The body is the physical manifestation of our internal state of being.”
Much of the beauty industry to date has focused on addressing the superficial signs of internal toxicity and imbalances… dark circles and puffy eyes for example. In the Chinese tradition, this would be considered an indication of kidney disharmony and would be treated with lifestyle adjustments and prescribed herbal remedies to bring that organ system back into a healthy state.
Moving forward, we will be partnering with holistic health professionals to create bespoke wellness programs which include detoxification, nutrition, internal herbal supplementation, and restorative mind-body practices (such as yoga, tai chi and acupuncture) as a compliment to our topical herbal regimens which we will customize based on each individuals constitutional and wellness assessment. We’ll also be building the BIOS brand by offering holistic interior design and architectural services through our sister business “BIOS INTERIORS”, to help our clientele maintain a state of health and wellness through supportive surroundings.
What kind of experiences are you planning to host on Keenobby?
We will be hosting skincare, aromatherapy and wellness workshops with an educational focus on Ayurveda, herbalism and holistic living.
