We’ve asked her a few questions about her journey as a sculptor:

Tell us a little about yourself and how you moved to New York from Central Asia

I  grew up in Kyrgyzstan,  a small former Soviet Union Republic in Central Asia. Our country is known for an exceptional clean air, beautiful Tien Shane mountains and the world’s largest alpine lake Issyk-Kul. The curiosity about America and its culture was passed over to me through my mom. My mom worked as an English teacher at that time and thus American movies, books and traditions were a big part of my life. Soon after finishing college I decided to visit the country which I felt I knew so much about.

Where does your passion for clay sculpting come from?

My passion for sculpting was found accidentally. It is all started from the first time my husband took me to the art and craft store. Since back in my country there weren’t any specialized stores I felt amazed to see so many arts and crafts goods. For some reason the very first thing I got my hands on was clay. Since that day sculpting became a big part of my life.

What are some of the challenges you had to face when you first started sculpting?

I remember getting very upset when my flowers didn’t turn out to be perfect. I used to redo dozens of time the same flower. However,  I realized that the true beauty is in imperfection and once I learned that I really started enjoying every single minute I spend sculpting.

How has clay sculpting changed your life?

I love sculpting and doing what you love feels amazing. Every time I make something or  teach someone else it brings me joy.  It makes me proud and happy to know that something I make put a smile on someone’s face.

What can the participants expect to learn from your class?

Participants will be introduced to the new type of nontoxic, lightweight and easy to work with clay. They will learn the basic flower sculpting technique that can be served as a good starting point for sculpting.
