Aba is the founder and creator of Aba Love Apothecary. The love of plant medicine led her to a discovery of exotic flowers, humble weeds & seeds, precious oils, sacred woods and resins that were rich in telling the stories of natures secrets and the history of the world.
How did you get into perfumery?
I got into perfumery when I began incorporating essential oils into holistic health practices. Before that, I always loved anything aromatic. But after a few powerful reiki & acupuncture sessions I came to know that essential oils were pivotal in boosting my experience. And I always loved how I smelled after sessions. I knew then it was a more intimate way of perfuming the body. I did a lot of exploring, experimenting and studying. I could have gone the traditional route and studied perfume under a big name like Givaudan or Firmenich, but I decided that I connected to the healing aspect of Aromatherapy more than ingredients farmed in a lab. So when I found a program that offered certification- I went for it!
What is botanical perfumery? And what do you love about it?
Botanical perfumery is the artistry of creating perfume with 100% natural materials. Botanical ingredients encompass a variety of plant and animal ingredients such as essential oils, absolutes, CO’2 extractions, concretes and tintcures of plant matter macerated in ethanol. What I love about botanical perfumery is that it essentially helps us connect to plants in way that makes our daily routines feel more satisfying. It greats heightened sensory awareness and forces us to behold the full potential with something as simple as a lemon peel or a sprig of rosemary. I also love it for teaching us about the mystique of flowers and the graciousness of trees. Did you know that flowers only emit their aromatic fullness when they start the cycle of decay? Sacred trees, such as Palo Santo can only be harvested after it dies a natural death. When we receive it in our hands, that lovely scent and energetic clearing is its gift to us. That is nature being utterly generous! Think about that.
What is the process of creating a new fragrance?
It usually begins with an inspiration: a story, a moment, an emotional need, something like that. The perfumer will choose and carefully test a variety of ingredients and explore several pairings before deciding on a harmonious blend. The basic formula is to use 3-5 ingredients diluted in a carrier oil or ethanol taking care to build a foundation for a balanced blend with base, heart and top notes. It’s key to be unhurried and build the perfume drop by drop!
What are your favorite smells and essential oils?
Tobacco always takes me to a magical place and I really connect to its spiritual nature. I also love exploring singular oils from a variety of countries. The aromatic profiles are unique and characteristic of the earth that they are grown in. Just like wine.
What kind of experiences do you host on Keenobby?
